Here at Multi-lab we produce many different components using fused silica that end up in laboratories around the world.
Much of this equipment is extremely delicate and fragile, often due to the nature of the experiments and the testing regime that is carried out in the Lab, the components must be designed in this fashion.
When using intricate components such as these, there can be occasions when damage unfortunately occurs or the critical parts become worn and require replacement. In these circumstances it can be worthwhile considering an option to repair rather than replace with new.
There is an assumption that broken quartz glass is unrepairable however this is not always the case.
Our Glass blowing Team have many years experience welding, cutting, machining and generally making good a wide range of components produced from quartz. It is possible to weld, join, butt together, build up areas of wear or even cut out worn or damaged sections and then piece back together with renewed or repaired parts.
This approach to repairing has saved many of our customers both time and expense prolonging the life of delicate parts and equipment.
We recently had to repair a complex Quartz Denuder for one of our long standing customers.
Experimental Quartz Rig The ‘business end of this Rig has broken off.
The part is quite complex with various cones and discs in the assembly which makes up a Quartz Denuder. A Denuder will be used for sampling gases and Multi-Lab have produced many of these, usually bespoke designs for research establishments.
This example is approximately 1000mm long.
Preparing to weld the broken pieces together
Attaching the parts.
Manipulating and holding the pieces together as they are welded and fused as one.
The welding leaves behind a white haze on the Quartz that needs to be removed.
We will clean this, acid wash and fully anneal to remove any traces of glass strain.
Good as new and ready to go.
